So you’ve got an opportunity to apply for job, and you’ve been hunting for a while. How long are you going to spend preparing your application and/or for the interview? Perhaps you’ve already prepared a standard cover letter, CV and you’ve had one or two interviews. But of course, each vacancy is unique, and if you really want to be considered seriously for it, you should make sure that your preparation is unique and tailored for the position.
A great place to start is to assemble all the information that you have about the vacancy:
- any job advert (and not just the one that you are replying to – check the press or on-line job boards to see if there are any other versions out there)
- the job description
- the person specification
- any covering material that the organisation sent out such as an application pack
